Homepage hijacking is a complicated problem to address, but Hijack This effectively examines vulnerable or suspect parts of your system, such as browser helper objects and certain types of registry keys. The program is continually updated to detect and remove new hijacks. Because it targets the methods used by hijackers to force you onto their sites, the application may generate dozens of items. In some cases, an item on the list may be a legitimate file.

HiJack This works in conjunction with Adaware and Spybot to rid your system of spyware infestation. Pressing the Scan button generates a list of possible hijackers, most of which are just customizations, such as Google Toolbar. You can highlight a particular item on the list and click the [Info on selected item] button. To find out if the entry is malicious, you’ll need to check Spy Checker, a site which provides a large public database on these parasites.

Hijack This will also clean the Browser Helper Objects (BHOs) on your computer. These objects help Internet Explorer manage connections with websites. They work with other files within IE to display ads, monitor the sites you visit, and even control your homepage.
